「ありました/いました」There was/were

「鳥が、3羽いました。」
There were three birds
There weren't three birds
Were there three birds?
Yes, there were.
No, there weren't.
How many birds were there?

「木に、鳥が3羽いました。」
There were three birds on the tree.
There weren't three birds on the tree.
Were there three birds on the tree?
Yes, there were.
No, there weren't.
How many birds were there on the tree?
There were three on it.

「学校が、5校ありました。」
There were five schools.
There weren't five schools.
Were there five schools?
Yes, there were.
No, there weren't.
How many schools were there?

「この町には、学校が5校ありました。」
There were five schools in this town.
There weren't five schools in this town.
Were there five schools in this town?
Yes, there were.
No, there weren't.
How many schools were there in this town?
There were five there.

"School" means gakko in Japanese.
"Town" means machi in Japanese.
